DESCRIPTION:

Examine the formation and development of Western Music from the middle of the ninth century to the beginning of the 15th century. The course centers upon the development of the Easter mass because only the priest of the Roman Catholic Church had the education necessary to write music down. Learn how the choirs in the great cathedrals in Europe, such as Notre Dame and Saint Vitus, knew the latest version of what they were singing. Learn why the music of the mass was often the result of several priests at different cathedrals throughout Europe.
