Today, sports have gone from the last section of the newspaper to front page with corruption scandals, issues of gender and race, doping and concussions. We also question the value of youth sports. In this course we will discuss the evolution of modern sports from pure recreation to billion-dollar enterprises and their influence on modern society. We will look at how sports are organized, financed and governed around the world; the power and influence of the media and of sports organizations like the NFL, FIFA, IOC and the NCAA; how they have affected national and local politics, race and women. Finally, we will look at international sports corruption and attempts to change it.
